A Teacher’s Thoughts on The Outdoor School

A Teacher’s Thoughts on The Outdoor School

Today’s blog is the first post in a new feature, “Teacher Thoughts.” This edition of Teacher’s Thoughts features Kameron Koeffler, 5th Grade ELA & S.S teacher at University of Texas Elementary School in Austin. We asked Kameron a few questions about why he looks forward to bringing his students to TOS every year.

TOS: What is your favorite part of the TOS experience?

Kameron: The Outdoor School is a one-of-a-kind experience for students. Not only are they brought out of their comfort zones (away from technology and screens), but students are engaged in hands-on courses that many urban-raised folks wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to experience.

TOS: Do you have a favorite class/ activity that you look forward to each year?

Kameron: Personally, my favorite class is a tie between archery and kayaking. Archery rewards people who are patient and willing to refine their technique. Kayaking rewards endurance and focus. Both of the activities are highly engaging, which make them a fan-favorite each year!

TOS: How does the field trip impact the students, do you see any change in them after the trip?

Kameron: There is definitely a noticeable difference after the trip, especially when it comes to facing fears and challenges. Students who were once afraid of the dark remember the night sensory activity. Students who were once afraid of heights, remember they conquered the wall. But most notably, EVERYONE misses the food! They always say nothing tastes as good as what Chef Travis makes! The activities create a unique experience that students talk about all year long. Additionally, It’s a great way to build community and build background knowledge on a variety of science and social studies skills.

TOS: Anything else you would like to add about the TOS experience?

Kameron: The staff is very accommodating, professional, and respectful. I look forward to many more adventures and memories at the Outdoor School!

Thank you Kameron for sharing your thoughts on your school’s annual trip! Keep an eye out for more teacher thoughts in future blogs!
